The Hidden Challenge of Plastic-Free Packaging (And How We Solved It)

Zorbette® + Nowadays Clean: Keeping Sustainable Detergent Dry, Firm, and Intact
The Unspoken Hurdle of Sustainable Packaging

We all want to eliminate single-use plastics. Across the consumer goods industry, brands are making incredible strides in transitioning to compostable, biodegradable, and zero-waste packaging. But when you remove plastic barriers, you often invite a silent enemy into the box: moisture.
For brands creating concentrated, active products, humidity isn't just an inconvenience, it’s a product killer.
That was exactly the challenge faced by Nowadays Clean, an innovative company changing the game with their sustainable laundry, dish, and toilet detergent cubes. They had the perfect plastic-free packaging and a highly effective product. But during shipping and storage in humid environments, they ran into a roadblock.
The Threat of Premature Activation
Detergent cubes are designed to activate upon contact with water. In high-humidity conditions, the ambient moisture penetrating plastic-free packaging is enough to trigger that activation. Without a barrier, Nowadays Clean's cubes risked crumbling, softening, or activating before they ever reached the customer's washing machine.
The traditional industry fix? Throw a silica gel packet into the box.
But there’s a glaring problem: standard silica gel packets are bulky and wrapped in synthetic, plastic-based materials (like Tyvek or poly-blends). If you’ve spent months engineering a 100% plastic-free, sustainable packaging experience, dropping a plastic desiccant packet inside completely defeats the purpose and ruins the unboxing experience for eco-conscious consumers.
The Solution: Zorbette Dri-Tabs
Nowadays Clean needed a moisture-control solution that was as uncompromising on sustainability as their core product. That’s where Zorbette Dri-Tabs® stepped in.
We partnered with Nowadays Clean to integrate our plant-based fiber desiccants (90% biodegradable) directly into their packaging. By utilizing Zorbette Dri-Tabs®, we successfully engineered a micro-environment that actively regulates humidity without compromising their zero-waste mission.
Here is what the integration achieved:
- Total Moisture Control: The fiber technology aggressively absorbs ambient humidity, neutralizing the threat of high-moisture shipping routes and storage facilities.
- Product Integrity: The detergent cubes no longer face the risk of crumbling or prematurely activating. They arrive at the customer's door completely dry, firm, and intact.
- The Closed Sustainability Loop: Because Zorbette Dri-Tabs utilize natural fiber desiccant technology, Nowadays Clean doesn't have to sacrifice their sustainable pledge to protect their product.
Protecting the Future of Packaging
Innovation in sustainability shouldn't mean compromising on product quality. As more brands pivot away from plastics, the supply chain must adapt to protect moisture-sensitive goods cleanly and efficiently.
We are incredibly proud to partner with forward-thinking companies like Nowadays Clean to ensure their products perform exactly as intended, straight out of the box.
Are you developing a moisture-sensitive product in sustainable packaging? Let’s talk about how fiber desiccant technology can protect your bottom line and your brand's mission.
